CIBT English Courses are designed to help students improve their English in the funnest possible way. Learning English with people from other countries is also an excellent way to get know about people from other cultures from all around the world.

ELICOS courses (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) assist students to attain the level of English proficiency required for successful academic studies at CIBT and other academic institutions in Australiaand also cater for people wishing to improve their English for social, business or work purposes.

The General English course is designed for those people who want to learn English for daily living in an English speaking environment. It teaches people to converse in English in practical settings such as finding directions, placing orders, writing letters, communicating or conversing in social events and occasions. The course also provides foundation for formal or academic English.

CIBT also offers adjustment support, academic counseling, mediation arrangements and learning support to its English Students.

The General English course is offered at 5 levels:

1. Elementary level
2. Pre intermediate level
3. Intermediate level
4. Upper intermediate level
5. Advanced level

At elementary level, a student learns to improve vocabulary and use of different tenses. At this level, the most appropriate language to use in different situations is also taught. The student will also learn how to write basic texts, engage in basic conversation, pronouns basic words, understand limited exchanges, read basic texts and become familiar with general grammar.

Pre intermediate level assists students to communicate in simple everyday life situations such as buying groceries, making and taking orders, talking on the telephone, with higher degrees of confidence. Additional grammatical skills are progressively introduced at this level. Pre-Intermediate level builds upon the knowledge gained at Elementary level.

Building on the skills previously learnt, the intermediate level students study more complex sentence construction using modal and conditional forms. A variety of texts are also read to help expand a student's vocabulary at this level. The student shall also work on extended written texts, and engaging in longer discussion on a variety of more complex topics. The student shall begin to understand real interactions and begin to express themselves in a ‘real’ way. More complex grammar is taught in line with these objectives.

Upper intermediate is the first of our top level courses. Grammar is emphasised, vocabulary expansion becomes paramount and the students are challenged to improve their English language skills at all levels - listening, speaking, reading and writing. By the completion of Upper Intermediate the student shall be able to compose a large range of texts on a variety of topics, as well as being able to communicate more naturally with improved listening, speaking and pronunciation skills .

The students in the advanced level class have learnt most of the language skills but they need to polish their usage. All the components of the English language- Speaking, Writing, and Grammar are taken to an advanced level at this stage. Academic English is also introduced at this level.

Normally, each course is of twelve (12) weeks duration but the duration could vary according to the current English language ability of a student.

Entry into the CIBT ELICOS program is flexible and a student may join anytime after undergoing a test to assess his/her current abilities in speaking, listening, reading and writing in English language. The test also determines the appropriate entry level course a student should be undertaking.

All foreign students with non-English academic background are recommended to do these courses before joining other faculties. Students cannot be enrolled in other courses without having minimum score in IELTS/TOFEL tests.

The duration of CIBT General English course is 4 - 72 weeks depending on level of entry.
